What To Do When You Catch A Cold Or The Flu

Sharing is caring!

If there is one thing that is certain throughout the fall and winter, it is that you’ll likely catch a cold or flu. Symptoms can range anywhere from fatigue, headache, sore throat, stuffy nose to cough, body aches and fever. The change in weather can affect some more than others and what is really important at this time of year, is that your immune system be in top notch shape.

What kinds of things weaken our immune system?

  1. Poor diet

A poor diet, such as one high in carbohydrates and other sugars, but low in vegetables, fruits, healthy fats and proteins, won’t allow your body to strengthen the immune system when it needs to fight off foreign invaders and you’ll get sick more often.

  1. Poor sleep

Poor sleep increases inflammatory markers (and therefore inflammation) in the body and weakens the immune system.

  1. Chronic stress

Chronic stress weakens the immune system. When a person is chronically stressed their cortisol levels are chronically high. High cortisol dampens the immune system, resulting in more episodes of illness.

What can you do to strengthen your immune system?

  1. Get a good night sleep

A good night sleep helps the body repair and re-energize for the next day. It also reduces inflammation.

  1. Stay well hydrated

Ensuring that your body has the fluids it needs, allows the body to flush away toxic buildup from the day and from any foreign invaders.

  1. Stay away from sugars

A diet high in sugars will significantly weaken the immune system’s function, leaving your greater risk of infection.

  1. Keep alcohol to a minimum

Alcohol is a poison to the body, which is why it’s called intoxication when someone drinks too much and begins to experience the effects. Alcohol promotes inflammation, slows down your liver, an organ involved in a multitude of processes in the body and key in detoxifying, and it also dampens your immune response.

  1. Eat your veggies

A diet high in a variety of vegetables gives the body all the vitamins and micro-minerals it needs to function optimally, quell inflammation and fight off foreign invaders.

What can you do when you do catch cold or the flu?

  1. Stay Hydrated! Echinaforce Hot Drink

When your body is well hydrated it functions more efficiently to clear out what doesn’t belongs there. So drink up! There is also a study that showed that chicken soup was effective at reducing the symptoms of colds and flus. Herbal teas and soups are a great way to stay hydrated. Echinaforce Hot Drink with Elderberry is also a great drink to have handy. It has fresh echinacea and elderberry juice in it, which is what makes it so effective in the treatment of colds and flus. Bonus that it can be used by everyone in the family who is 2 years old and up!

  1. Rest

Rest when your body tell you to rest and you’ll recover much faster.

  1. Humidifier with essential oil

Humidity will help break apart any chest congestion and if you add essential oils like eucalyptus and lavender, they will help clear phlegm and kill the virus in the air.

  1. Vitamin D & Zinc

Both of these are very important in helping the body’s immune system be as affective as possible and will help a lot, specially if you are deficient in either.

  1. Probiotics

Probiotics are the good bacteria in your gut and if these bacteria are in good shape, then your immune system will also be in good shape to keep you healthy or bring you back to health.
